Northern Colorado Jiu Jitsu: Mastering the Art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Professor Troy Pettyjohn

When it comes to learning martial arts, having the right instructor can make all the difference. At Northern Colorado Jiu Jitsu, our instructors are passionate about improving and protecting the lives of others through the teachings of martial arts. Let’s take a closer look at our Head Professor Troy Pettyjohn and his extensive martial arts background.

Early Life and Martial Arts Journey

Troy Pettyjohn was born and raised in Colorado, his martial arts journey began in 1981 after being bullied as a child. His initial interest in self-defense quickly grew into a pursuit of excellence and black belts in multiple martial arts. For the past 43 years, he has studied and competed in various martial arts, including kung fu, iaido, kendo, boxing, kickboxing, judo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu.

Teaching Judo and Jiu Jitsu

For the past decade, Troy has been teaching judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, where he currently serves as the head professor of the adult jiu-jitsu program and judo sensei. He continues to teach martial arts in hopes of passing on to others the same benefits that have enriched his life.

Black Belts and Certifications

Troy holds a first degree black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, which he was awarded in October 2022 under Master Rigan Machado. Additionally, he is a certified judo second degree black belt under The United States Judo Association. He is also certified in Northern Colorado Jiu Jitsu’s Gentle Art of Leadership Program.
